Dallas is proud to announce its inaugural entrance into the national August Wilson Monologue Competition. We have 11 area schools competing in the inaugural event, plus a school from Shreveport, Louisiana will be joining the Dallas regional competition.
Over a 150 students have thus far registered for the preliminary competition, scheduled for January 25, 2016. We are also proud to have on board as co-sponsors some of the elite professional theaters in Dallas. These theaters include Dallas Theatre Center, African-American Repertory Theatre and Soul Repertory Theatre, our latest co-sponsor.
I’ve also teamed up with the M.F.A. Graduate Actors at Southern Methodist University to provide workshops at the participating schools. Our first one will be in December.
On October 24, 2015, Dallas Theatre Center hosted a workshop for our competing schools. One of our teaching artists included Ms. Irma P. Hall, who is also a founding member of African-American Repertory Theatre. This theatre is also producing one of Mr. Wilson’s works during their season. I was very honored to have directed “Radio Golf” for them back in June. And, what’s more, unfortunately the actor playing Sterling became very ill during tech, and I, the director, had to step in and do the role! It wound up that his condition demanded he have complete bed rest for the month, so I performed the role for the duration of the run.
The finals in Dallas will be held at Southern Methodist University on February 15, 2016. I look forward to bringing a contingency to New York City for the finals in May.
As part of our inaugural year, Southern Methodist University is also sponsoring an August Wilson Essay Contest.
We are extremely excited about joining this wonderful and inspiring competition.
