Los Angeles

The August Wilson Monologue Competition enables students from all walks of life to discover August Wilson’s profound and deeply relevant works of art, study the craft of acting, explore their own creative voices, and learn more about our shared history and themselves.

Center Theatre Group has been the Los Angeles home for the National August Wilson Monologue Competition since 2011. More than a contest, the August Wilson Monologue Competition is an educational journey that includes workshops with teaching artists where students hone their acting and storytelling skills, auditions where theatre professionals offer feedback to all participants, and an introduction to August Wilson and The American Century Cycle.

ELIGIBILITY: Current high school students in grades 10, 11, and 12 from Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties are eligible to participate (verify your county at schoolfinder.us. Students must be enrolled in high school the whole school year and may not be older than 19 on the day of the National Finals (which take place in the spring) to participate in all stages of the program.

The August Wilson In-School Residency Program is a unique semester-long program engaging high school students in an in-depth, personal and artistic study of August Wilson and his theatrical contribution to society. Participating classroom teachers partner with Center Theatre Group teaching artists in presenting a curriculum covering all ten plays from August Wilson’s Century Cycle, with an in-depth focus on Fences and selected scenes and monologues from the other nine plays. As part of the residency experience, all participating classrooms will attend the August Wilson Monologue Competition regional finals at the Mark Taper Forum.

“I am so humbled to have been able to witness the transformation of my students from a self-perception of “drop-out” to engaged heartfelt citizens and change-agents in their own lives. The August Wilson In-School Residency held the mirror up to my students so that they could see in August Wilson their own greatness.” – 2014 Residency Teacher
