IN THE POCKET, a world premiere, celebrates the neo-soul music movement of the late 1990s in Atlanta. We are seeking artists who can bring authenticity, musicality, and a deep connection to this spirited exploration of one of music’s most emotive genres.

SEEKING

Actors who are singers and/or who are proficient with the instruments described in the role breakdown below. Ability to play through key changes and to play solos preferred. Experience in musical theater is preferred but not mandatory.

PREPARATION

All roles – singers and musicians: prepare one of the songs below to self-sourced accompaniment or a cappella. Musicians come prepared to play your instrument (keyboard, drums and amp will be provided). All other instruments should be self provided/brought to your audition. Prepare one self-chosen contemporary dramatic monologue no more than 2 minutes long:

  • “How High the Moon”
  • “People Make the World Go Round”
  • “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing”
  • “Killing Me Softly”
  • “Hopeless” (Dionne Farris)
  • “Love” (Musiq Soulchild)

ROLES (6) – note one actor per role will play character at multiple ages

  • NOMADIC: 18, 23, and 43, Black woman. Versatile, strong vocalist. Range: Soprano and Mezzo Soprano (G3 to GS). Vocal sensibility showcasing an influence of R&B, Soul, and Jazz. Charismatic. Southern with a hint of Hip Hop flavor. A striver. She’s the “it” girl. She has an X factor. When she walks into a room, everyone notices.
  • KEYS: 23, 28, and 48, Black woman. Vocalist and Keyboardist. Able to play by ear. Proficient in Jazz improvisation. Range: Alto and/or Mezzo-Soprano. Seeking a soulful voice with Jazz nuance. Must be able to improvise. She’s the most highly trained talent in the band. She is also thick. Big-hearted; but her passion is often confused for animosity. (Must self-accompany at auditions.)
  • HARVEY: 32, 37, and 57, Black man. Bass guitar. A descendant of Blues royalty, he’s a voice of reason who brings a certain stability to the group. (Must play at auditions.)
  • FRISK: 25, 30, and 50, Black man. Saxophonist. The easygoing peacemaker…and a shameless flirt. (Must play at auditions.)
  • ALI ACE: 22, 27, and 47, Black man. Drummer. A skilled musician and de facto leader of the band. He brings a kinetic energy to every conversation and all his endeavors. Also sings. (Must play at auditions.)
  • PRODUCER: 30s, Black woman. A wannabe documentary filmmaker creating reality tv fare. Though detail-oriented, there’s a hidden sensuality underneath her Type A veneer. (Also plays AGENT LEE, a Drug Enforcement Administration investigator. THIS ROLE IS CAST.
