Dear Family,

White supremacy, systemic injustice, and a racist culture are ingrained in the fabric of our country. True Colors is a part of a network of Black Theaters that has used its platform to disrupt the status quo, hijack complacency, and center the narrative on the voices of Black People. This work is deeply personal to us. We are a Black-led and Black-serving institution. The people who make up the majority of our community are the ones grossly affected by the refusal to dismantle systems and to call out people and organizations that are complicit, knowingly or not, in its pervasiveness.

We are balancing a heavy load. True Colors’ staff is looking to do our part individually, and collectively, to advocate for a seismic shift. We are trying to work through our hurt while finding ways to respond to the calls for change. We are analyzing our internal systems and programs to find ways to better serve Atlanta and our national community. We know that we can’t fuel the drive for change if our emotional and physical wells are empty. As we take a pause to reflect and renew, know that the dedication to our mission has never been stronger.

Our focus has been, and will continue to be, about creating a home for the celebration of Black stories and ensuring that our voices are heard. We endeavor to thrive at the intersection of Artistic Excellence and Civic Engagement and will continue to use our platforms to do just that. This week, we’ll use our virtual platform to share videos, poems, monologues, and art offerings from members of our staff and artists in our community in a series called #RealResponses. This work can’t be done alone. We invite you, those who share our commitment, to join us – share your real-time feelings via social media and email.

At True Colors, we believe that art changes things. We believe in collective action and hope to inspire individual response. We want you to be brave. We want you to feel empowered. We want you to take care of yourself and prepare for the journey ahead. We want you to vote and hold leaders accountable. We all have a duty.
