The Movement Lives On: BLM and Atlanta Theatre

Amee Vyas has been a fixture of Atlanta theater for 20 years, and for a time was Atlanta’s first and only AEA member of Asian-Indian descent. Recent forays into directing have taken her to Seattle, WA as a resident guest director for the Fern Shakespeare Company. She can also be spotted in commercials and tv shows if you’re vigilant and have some good cable subscriptions! Co-founding East by Southeast, a platform dedicated to connecting and featuring work by and of American artists of Asian descent, is one of the highlights of her career so far. Her most recent project with East by Southeast allowed her to direct a staged reading of PERIL by Skye Passmore, a play examining Asian-identity and violence against Asians as portrayed in the media, which was given funding through the Alliance Theatre’s Reiser Lab grant. She looks forward to continuing to uplift stories that transcend gender and color as the new normal for American theater.
