Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company Receives
$250,000 from Doris Duke Charitable Foundation

June 17, 2020 (Atlanta, GA) – Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company is the recipient of a $250,000 Leadership Grant for Arts Organizations from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. This 3-year grant is awarded to support the self-defined, long-term goals of organizations that have demonstrated excellence in and sustained commitment to the fields of dance, jazz and theatre.

True Colors will apply the funds to developing a New Play Lab that will amplify the voices of Black playwrights, to building staff capacity to cultivate and steward individual giving, and to building an operating reserve to ensure long-term financial sustainability.

“We are excited about the work that this transformational grant will make possible,” said Jamil Jude, Artistic Director. “We started our season with a celebration of Black women on and off the stage, and this grant will seed a new trajectory for the theatre and enable us to envision a brighter future for True Colors Theatre Company.”

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation grant is the third national grant True Colors has been awarded in the last two years, as the Company seeks to reinforce its voice as a national theatre. The Company received a Bloomberg AIM grant in 2018, and is the host theatre for an awardee of the 2020 Theatre Communications Group Fox Fellowship.
