ABOUT THE PLAYS

Clementine in the Lower Nine by Dan Dietz

Winner of the prestigious 2011 Edgerton New Plays Award.

When Hurricane Katrina tore through New Orleans, Clementine’s family scattered to the winds. Nine months later, they are reunited and anxious to rebuild – but a new storm is brewing. Her husband has arrived from Houston with a strange young girl, who just may be a prophet, and the ghosts of those lost are awakening. Set to the jazz and blues of the Lower Ninth Ward, this modern retelling of Agamemnon delves into the agony and hope that comes after the storm.

April 7 @ 7 PM, Southwest Arts Center, 915 New Hope Rd, Atlanta, GA 30331

Any Given Monday by Bruce Graham

Lenny is a great guy: a good teacher, an excellent father and a loving husband. So when his daughter has a crisis of faith and his wife leaves him for a smooth-talking casanova, his life is shattered. While Lenny consoles himself with pizza and Monday Night Football, his best friend Mickey takes matters into his own hands. A comedy about the curveballs life throws at you, Any Given Monday as how far is “too far” when a family is trying to get back to happily ever after.

April 14 @ 7 PM, Actor’s Express, 887 W. Marietta Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30318

The First Breeze of Summer by Leslie Lee

The original production of The First Breeze of Summer, directed by NEC founder Douglas Turner Ward, received a Tony Award nomination for Best Play during its 1975 run at Broadway’s Palace Theatre. The play takes place over the course of one sweltering weekend in June, as the struggles of three generations of the Edwards family collide. Gremmar, the family matriarch, looks back on her past and considers its legacy for her children and grandchildren as they confront the choices that will define their futures. Lee’s Obie Award-winning play is billed as “a timeless portrait of family bonds and coming of age.”

Leslie Lee passed away on January 20, 2014 at the age of 83.

April 21 @ 7 PM, Balzer Theatre at Herren’s, 84 Luckie Street, Atlanta, GA 30303

Fetch Clay, Make Man by Will Power

In the days leading up to one of Cassius Clay’s most anticipated fights, the heavyweight boxing champion forms an unlikely friendship with the controversial Hollywood star Stepin Fetchit. Fetch Clay, Make Man explores the improbable bond that forms between two drastically different and influential cultural icons. One a vibrant and audacious youth, the other a resentful and almost forgotten relic, together they fight to shape their legacies amidst the struggle of the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-1960s. This true story is as powerful and poetic as Clay himself while also as humorous and irreverent as Fetchit’s signature act.
